Water Chiller FAQs

Water Chillers

Yes, but in most cases a storage tank will decrease the size of the chiller needed and reduce your peak electrical demand.  The water is chilled 10F each pass thru the chiller so it is necessary to circulate the water thru the chiller to achieve lower discharge temperatures and is why most customers use a storage tank.

Yes. To operate below 40ºF (4.4ºC), a glycol solution and the use of heat exchangers are needed.  Please discuss this option with your Sioux sales representative.

Yes, a Carrier technician will start up the chiller once the unit is installed.

Yes, water should be filtered and free of debris to prevent damage to the heat exchanger.  Sioux has water strainers available to assist with this.

Yes, additional valves may be required to add to your tank to isolate the water heater during the summer and the chiller during winter.

E-coating provides superior protection to the coil especially in corrosive environments and makes cleaning the coils easier.

Makeup water is introduced to a cirulating pump in the system that pumps the water through the chiller and then to the customer's storage tank.  A return line is plumbed from the storage tank back to the circulating pump to go back through the chiller to complete the loop.  If a strainer/filter is installed in the circulation line, this should be placed in between the pump and the chiller so it is filtering any particles that may come in the make-up water or from the storage tank.

Yes, Sioux has a complete line of pumping stations properly sized for each of the chillers that we sell so you can ensure that you have the proper water flow through the chiller.
